Client: UK Border Force
Duration: 16 Weeks
SOL Services won the tender to remodel and refurbish the custodial suite at Stansted Airport to meet current regulations. Works involved:
Building works: Creation of a new detainee shower room with anti-ligature and automatic purge shower tower unit, dividing the existing common WC providing a separate staff and detainee facility, forming two interview rooms with noise reduction to 45dB rating with acoustic paneling to provide minimum reverberation for recording, and re-configuring the medical room to provide a more suitable layout.
M&E: Upgrading the Fire Alarm system, installation of new CCTV to allow for independent viewing of the three holding cells from a dedicated watch room, replacement of the Affray Alarm system and access controls linked to the security control monitoring panel.
The project was delivered within strict timescales and working schedules, involving 12 hour days, 7 days a week to ensure minimal disruption to the airport operation. Having carried out various projects for the Border Force in the UK and internationally, our staff were already security cleared and also had to be cleared to enable airside working. All material deliveries also had to be pre-booked and sent to a holding location to be brought airside by authorised vehicles coordinated with the airport. The scope grew during the original project period of 12 weeks, with a final completion of 16 weeks.
